The Healing Arts - A Healer's Meditation On Me As You
by Russ Reina
Each of us is a complex conglomeration of receptors. Every cell in our body receives and assimilates a minute slice of our total environment. This goes on both internally (the cell reading its own prompts) and externally (the cell's interpretation of its surroundings).
Each part of us, whether it is a single cell or a community of cells (organs), works within the limitations of its ability to receive and use the signals it's getting. For example, a liver cell "perceives" a foreign body, and it can do what it can do for the larger system, which is to filter it out of circulation. The liver cell, however, can't turn a molecule of carbon dioxide into oxygen. That is working within its limitations, or, more accurately, fulfilling its purpose.
I am an organism whose sense of self is dependent upon billions of individual cells. Each of these cells is fulfilling its purpose. I have no personal experience of any of them individually, though collectively, I do at times, like with a bellyache. Most of their lives come and go without my notice. In the process of them all working together, for some inexplicable reason, that which I call "I" has an experience of self within the context of a greater environment.
I am a part of the planet that I live on, with an awareness of my self. Yet, as what could reasonably be called a cell of this planet -- just as one of my skin follicles is an integral part of MY body and appears to have no consciousness that it is -- I have no experience of whether or not the planet has a sense of itself. Nor do I understand what function I have in the larger scheme of things.
(I've heard it said that we, as human beings, are pretty much the sperm of the planet because we will be the one's who jump ship and colonize -- spelled f-e-r-t-i-l-i-z-e -- other planets. Everything else appears to be window-dressing!)
If that can be true with me, that I am a conscious by-product of all my (seemingly) unconscious parts, it can be true, not only with the planet, but with everything else. The point is that intelligence must have many, many different forms, from that of a speck of dust to the intelligence of all that is. The Universe may be nothing more than different levels of one consciousness - from micro to macro -- experiencing itself.
Quantum physics acknowledges that each part of us is both matter and energy-- particle and wave. Extrapolating that to the larger organism, my physical body is no more than a certain frequency. As complex as that may seem, still, I am no more than the cumulative wavelength of each of my cells.
In the same way, so is the earth, and now, I am just one of the many billions of similar tones that make up that unfolding symphony.
From this perspective, when I take into consideration that each cell in my body is almost identical to each cell in your body (in terms of function, there's no difference), the wavelength you get to work with is so close to my own; it's like tweaking the dial of a standard FM radio from 95.0 to 95.0000000006 to get from you to me.
That tells me we are "wired" to pretty much experience the same thing. There are so few differences between our individual components. Their "purposes" are very narrowly defined. This holds true with the environments we live in. Differentiation expresses itself in fractions of degrees. In the Big Picture, the leeway that any of us have to experience something different is so narrow as to be infinitesimally small.
For example, a common experience in life is that when you're not aware of your surroundings there is a chance that something can pop out at you and cause a sudden disruption of your experience. For the Manhattanite, that would be not looking both ways before crossing the street and almost getting hit by a car. For a child of the bush, that would mean not noticing the scat of a predator on the trail until it's too late. It's the same basic "law" if you will -- you snooze, you loose -- but experienced differently by different people in different contexts.
On a physiologic level, it gets even more basic than that. All we're talking about is an adrenaline rush. In fact, that exact same physical experience is what happens in two completely different situations: One, like a roller-coaster, we interpret as exciting, and the other, like getting robbed, we interpret as fearful. Bottom line, it's the same human experience, fight or flight.
Everything else is minute and, perhaps more important, manufactured details that have come about by the only thing that really does seem to separate us, the interpretations of our minds.
And part of our wiring means that that is exactly what we get hung up on.
